Sharm is famous for its colorful corals and unusual fish species. Even if you just take a mask and snorkel, you can discover a whole universe underwater.
2. Modern Districts.
The most famous center of life is Naama Bay: here you'll find restaurants, bars, and nightclubs. For more refined leisure, Soho Square is perfect: fountains with light shows, quality cafes, open-air concerts.
3. Coral Beaches.
Most beaches have a coral bottom, so pontoons are often used for entering the water. If you love snorkeling and diving — this is the ideal place. But don't forget special footwear to protect your feet from the reefs.
4. Popular Hotels.
The biggest chain brands (Rixos, Four Seasons, Marriott, etc.) often have their own dive centers, water parks, and VIP beach areas. Accommodation prices here are generally higher than in Hurghada, but promotions and last-minute deals can significantly save your budget.
Hurghada
Hurghada is Egypt's oldest resort, which began attracting tourists back in the mid-20th century. Despite serious competition from Sharm, Hurghada remains a favorite destination for families, diving beginners, and those seeking more affordable prices for a vacation.
1. Predominantly Sandy Beaches.
This factor often becomes decisive for travelers with children. A gentle entry into the sea, soft sand, and minimal waves make for a calm and safe vacation.
2. Variety of Hotels.
Hurghada is famous for its wide choice of accommodation: from simple 'three-star' hotels to five-star complexes with private beaches. The price tag for 4–5* here is often slightly lower than in Sharm El-Sheikh.
3. Main Districts:
- Sakkala: the historical city center, where you can immerse yourself in the atmosphere of local life, stroll through markets, and try local cuisine.
- El Gouna: an elite district with architecture in the style of an 'Egyptian Venice'.
- Sahl Hasheesh: a relatively new destination with luxurious hotels and spacious beaches.
If Sharm El-Sheikh is a symbol of vibrant nightlife and expensive parties, then Hurghada is closer to classic beach relaxation. People come here for the size of hotel grounds, a laid-back atmosphere, and the opportunity to save money.
Climate and Weather
Egypt delights with sunshine year-round, but there are nuances related to winds, temperature, and seasonal crowds.
Sharm El-Sheikh
- Hot Summer: In July and August, temperatures easily rise above +40 °C. However, the dry climate and proximity to the sea make the heat more bearable.
- Comfortable Spring and Autumn: April, May, September, October are considered the best time to visit: the sea is warm, and the heat is not yet (or no longer) extreme.
- Winter Winds: From December to February, windy weather is common here. A plus for water sports enthusiasts, but beachgoers may need extra protection from the wind.
Hurghada
- Similar temperature patterns, but winds are felt more strongly due to the more exposed coastline.
- In summer, temperatures of +40 °C and above are also possible, so sunscreen and a hat are essential.
- Optimal months for a holiday are from late March to early June and from September to November, when the air is pleasantly warm at +25…+30 °C, and the wind is not as strong.
- In winter, Hurghada can be slightly cooler in the evenings, especially in January.
Both resorts are well-suited for a holiday in the spring-autumn period. If you don't like wind, for winter holidays it's worth considering the bays of Sharm, which are better protected from gusts.
Beaches and Sea
Sharm el-Sheikh
- Coral seabed is the hallmark. Most hotels offer a special pontoon to avoid damaging the corals.
- Underwater world. Right by the shore, you'll encounter colorful fish, and if you swim a little further, real coral 'gardens' open up. This is a snorkeling and diving paradise in Egypt.
- On some beaches — especially in elite areas — everything is set up for comfortable relaxation: soft sunbeds, bars with chilled drinks, personal umbrellas.
Hurghada
- Sandy coastline, gentle entry into the water. This is very convenient for holidays with small children.
- Reefs exist, but not as close to the shore: to admire the corals, you often have to take a boat to nearby islands or go on an excursion.
- Overall, the beaches are more spacious, and deep water doesn't start immediately. An excellent option for those not very confident in their swimming skills.
If your goal is vibrant snorkeling, Sharm el-Sheikh comes first. For family holidays with small children and those who simply want to lie on the sand, Hurghada will seem more convenient.
Hotels and Infrastructure
Sharm el-Sheikh
- High service level: most hotels of 4* and 5* categories maintain European standards, offer extensive animation programs, spa centers, restaurants with world cuisines.
- Nightlife: besides hotel entertainment, there are plenty of clubs and bars. The most popular are concentrated in the Naama Bay area.
- Price range (as of 2025):
- 3* — from 40–50 USD per night (for a double room),
- 4* — from 60–80 USD,
- 5* — from 90–150 USD and above.
Hurghada
- Wider choice of budget options: there are many 3* and 4* hotels suitable for travelers on a limited budget.
- Old Town (Sakkala) and the new tourist area (Marina) offer a variety of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops.
- Price range (as of 2025):
- 3* — from 30–40 USD per night (for a double room),
- 4* — from 50–70 USD,
- 5* — from 80–120 USD and above.
- All Inclusive here is often cheaper, with a fairly wide selection of dishes and drinks. For those who value savings without losing quality, Hurghada becomes an excellent compromise.
Water Sports
Sharm el-Sheikh
- Diving: Some of the most popular dive sites are near Ras Mohammed National Park and Tiran Island. My personal favorite is an early morning dive when the underwater world is especially active.
- Snorkeling: Almost every hotel offers equipment rental. Underwater excursions are available even for beginners.
- Windsurfing: The winds here are not as strong, but there are bays where you can test your skills.
Hurghada
- Kitesurfing: Regular winds and a kitesurfing school in the Soma Bay area make Hurghada a mecca for wave riders.
- Diving: The reefs are a bit further from the shore, but numerous full-day dive tours are organized (with lunch on board).
- Snorkeling: Also developed, but it's better to book boat trips to nearby islands (Giftun Island, etc.).
