New Year by the Sea: When to Book and What to Watch in the Price

New Year's week is the most expensive time of the year. The same hotel and flight that cost a certain amount in early December cost noticeably more on December 30, and as the holiday approaches, the price doesn't drop — it rises. Let's break down why that happens, when to book, and where it's actually warm this time of year.

Why New Year's dates are more expensive

  • Demand exceeds availability. Everyone has holidays on the same days, but there are just as many planes and rooms as usual.
  • New Year's dinner. At many hotels, the festive dinner on December 31 is a mandatory surcharge, and it's already included in the tour price for these dates.
  • Minimum stay. Hotels often don't sell New Year's Eve separately: only stays of 7 nights or more.

When to book

The earlier, the more choice. In October and early November, there are still convenient departure times and hotels for any budget. By December, only the most expensive options remain, or compromises — with an inconvenient flight or a hotel you wouldn't have chosen.

Don't count on a last-minute deal right before the chimes strike: for departures on December 28–30, available seats almost never appear. Last-minute offers at this time are usually for the first days of January — more on that below.

Where it's warm for New Year

Egypt

The most affordable option by the sea. During the day it's around +22…24°C, water +22…23°C. Evenings are cool and sometimes windy, so choose a hotel with a heated pool and bring a sweater. Sharm El Sheikh is usually slightly warmer and quieter than Hurghada. We have a separate article about Sharm hotels — "10 Popular Five-Star Hotels".

UAE

A comfortable winter: around +25°C during the day, water +23…24°C. You can swim, but it's not the tropics. On the plus side, there's plenty to do besides the beach: theme parks, observation decks, New Year's fireworks in Dubai. Tours cost more than Egypt, and hotel meal plans are more often breakfast or half board.

Thailand

High season: dry, +30°C, warm sea. The flight is long, so it makes sense to go for 10–12 nights. New Year's dates here sell out earliest — if you want Phuket, don't put it off.

Sri Lanka

On the southwest coast, the season begins in December: the ocean calms down, the rains stop. This is an option for those who want nature, tea plantations, and surfing in addition to the beach. For more on the island's resorts, see the article "Holidays in Sri Lanka".

Turkey

Not a beach destination: the sea is cold, around +14…16°C during the day. However, hotels keep indoor heated pools, spas, and festive programs open for the winter, and prices are lower than in hot countries. It's a good fit if you want all-inclusive and a change of scenery rather than a tan.

How to save money without ruining the holiday

  • Fly on January 2–4. Celebrate New Year at home and spend your holidays by the sea. Such tours are noticeably cheaper than departures on December 28–30, and that's exactly when last-minute deals appear.
  • Shift your dates by a day or two. Adjacent departure dates can differ in price more than adjacent hotels.
  • Compare 7 vs. 10 nights. The flight costs the same, so each additional night is cheaper.
  • Choose a good 4★ instead of an average 5★. In winter, a heated pool and recent reviews matter more than an extra star.
  • Check what's included for dinner. Whether New Year's dinner is included in the price and whether it's mandatory — this is visible in the tour description.

What to check before paying

  • Cancellation terms. For holiday dates, they're stricter than usual: getting a refund for a tour cancelled in December may not be possible.
  • Passport validity. Many countries require a passport to be valid for several months after the trip. Country-specific rules are in the "Entry Rules" section.
  • Flight times. A night departure there and a morning return eat up two days of your holiday.
  • Heated pool. In Egypt and the UAE in winter, this isn't a luxury — it's a condition for kids to swim at all.
