Georgia Travel Seasons: Weather by Month & Best Time to Visit

Georgia is an amazing country of contrasts: from the coastal areas of the Black Sea to majestic mountain ranges and cozy plains. Why can weather critically affect your vacation? It's all about the diversity of climate and seasonality — some types of recreation are only available during certain months, and unpredictable weather conditions can either enrich your experience or create unnecessary complications.

In addition to its landscape diversity, Georgia is famous for its rich culture and gastronomy: here you will find classic Georgian khinkali and khachapuri, gastronomic festivals, wine tours, and many national holidays. In this article, we will look at the overall weather picture by seasons and months, and also share practical tips to make your trip truly comfortable.

Tour prices to Georgia

Brief overview of seasons in Georgia

Winter (December – February) is suitable for alpine skiing in Gudauri and Bakuriani. Spring (March – May) delights with the awakening of nature, milder climate, and affordable prices. Summer (June – August) is the time for beach holidays, especially in the Batumi area, but be prepared for heat. Autumn (September – November) is considered the golden time for wine tours and walks around Tbilisi in velvet weather.

January – February

This is the coldest time in the continental part of Georgia, especially in the mountainous regions, where the thermometer can drop below 0 °C. On the coast (Batumi, Kobuleti) it's usually +6…+10 °C, the sea is cold, swimming is impossible. However, ski resorts (Gudauri, Bakuriani) are at the peak of the season: it's snowy there, with many slopes operating for different skill levels.

The temperature begins to rise: in Tbilisi +12…+18 °C, and in the coastal areas the air can warm up to +15…+20 °C. The sea is still cool, around +10…+12 °C, but for sightseeing, visiting monasteries, and walking through mountain gorges, this time is ideal. There are fewer tourists, and hotel and tour prices remain moderate.

May – June

In late spring and early summer, the weather becomes more stable: +20…+25 °C in the central part, in Batumi — around +22…+24 °C. The sea warms up to +18…+20 °C, swimming is already possible, but still not comfortable for everyone. However, the mountain pastures turn green, and fruit orchards bloom. May and June are famous for the first gastronomic festivals — the perfect time to taste young wine and fresh vegetables.

July – August

High season on the Black Sea coast: daytime +27…+30 °C, water temperature rises to +24…+26 °C. In Batumi, short downpours are frequent, but they quickly give way to sunshine. Tbilisi is quite sultry at this time, up to +35 °C. If you don't tolerate heat well, it's better to head to the mountain regions — it's cooler there and you can go trekking through the most beautiful valleys.

September – October

The famous velvet autumn: in the coastal area, comfortable +22…+26 °C, the sea is still warm (+23…+24 °C). In the vineyards of Kakheti, the harvest begins, and Rtveli festivals take place, where tourists can participate in grape treading. In Tbilisi, the air is no longer so scorching, so excursions through the ancient streets of the Georgian capital are especially pleasant.

November – December

Mount Kazbek.

The weather begins to deteriorate: temperatures drop to +5…+10 °C in the central regions, and around +10…+15 °C by the sea. However, ski resorts are gradually preparing to open the season, and Tbilisi's restaurants and bars delight with warming dishes like kharcho and chashushuli. If you're looking for peaceful walks and cheaper accommodation prices, this period can be quite attractive.

Weather and Features of Holidays at Popular Georgian Resorts

Georgia is famous for its incredible geographical diversity: on one side, the Black Sea with its subtropical climate, and on the other, the high Caucasus mountains, where snow can lie almost year-round.

Tbilisi

The capital of Georgia is located in a basin, where summers can be very hot (up to +35 °C), and winters are moderately cool (around +2…+5 °C). Spring and autumn are the best seasons for exploring sights: leisurely strolls along David Aghmashenebeli Street, photoshoots at Narikala Fortress, and relaxing in cafes on Rustaveli Avenue. Don't miss the chance to try khinkali and khachapuri in cozy traditional establishments.

Batumi

A famous seaside resort with a mild climate. The beach season lasts from late May to early October, with the peak in July and August. However, sudden rains are possible during this time. Despite this, Batumi is not just about the beach; it also offers modern architecture, sights, a luxurious promenade, festivals (music and gastronomic), and the famous Dolphinarium.

Ski Resorts (Gudauri, Bakuriani)

In Gudauri, winter lasts from December to March, and snow lingers longer due to the high-altitude climate. It features modern lifts and slopes for beginners and pros. Bakuriani, a more family-friendly resort, is famous for its gentle slopes and wide forest trails. The peak season is January–February when the snow is most stable.

Borjomi

This town is surrounded by forests and mountain streams, and its mineral springs make it an important balneological resort. The average temperature here is moderate even in summer, and there is snow in winter, but not extreme cold. In summer, you can stroll through the Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park, and in winter, enjoy thermal baths and clean mountain air.

Kakheti

The homeland of famous Georgian wine. The best time to visit is September–October, during the grape harvest (Rtveli). Temperatures are around +20…+25 °C—perfect for tours of wine cellars and tastings. Don't miss Telavi and Sighnaghi—colorful towns overlooking the Alazani Valley.

Conclusions and Recommendations

So, when is the best time to go to Georgia? For ski holidays, choose winter; for the beach season—summer in Batumi; and if you want wine and excursions without scorching heat, then September and October will be the perfect choice. Prices usually drop during the shoulder seasons (March–April, November–December), and weather comfort depends on your personal preferences.
