Visa requirements

Citizens of Belarus need a visa to travel to Tanzania. It can be obtained in advance online on the official website visa.immigration.go.tz or on arrival at the airport.

A tourist visa costs 50 USD; it is single-entry and valid for up to 90 days. An application is made for each traveller, including children. Online applications are processed within up to 10 days — apply in advance.

Insurance for Zanzibar

Tourists visiting Zanzibar need local medical insurance from the state-owned Zanzibar Insurance Corporation — even if you already have other travel insurance. For an adult it costs 44 USD and is valid for 92 days. The policy covers emergency medical expenses, accidents, baggage delay and theft.

The policy is purchased online at visitzanzibar.go.tz and paid by card. It is sent by e-mail — print it and take it with you. Without the policy you may be refused entry to Zanzibar.

Documents required for entry

• Passport valid for at least 6 months;
• e-Visa or visa on arrival application form;
• Immigration card completed in English;
• Return ticket or onward ticket to a third country — it is checked on arrival;
• Hotel booking confirmation (tour voucher);
• Zanzibar Insurance Corporation policy — for a trip to Zanzibar;
• Medical insurance.

After passport control you keep the stub of the immigration card — hold on to it until departure.

Customs regulations

Duty-free allowance:

• 200 cigarettes or 250 g of tobacco; 1 litre of spirits; up to 0.5 litres of perfume or eau de toilette; personal belongings for personal use.

Prohibited exports:

• ivory and ivory items, rhino horn, wild animal skins, gold, diamonds, and cloves without documents proving legal purchase.

Plants and animals may be imported only with a phytosanitary or veterinary certificate; rabies vaccination is mandatory.

Duty is charged on professional filming equipment, radio and recording equipment and musical instruments.

Cash exceeding the equivalent of 10,000 USD must be declared on entry and departure.

Good to know:

Outside the beach and hotel, wear modest clothing in towns and villages: shoulders, stomach and knees should be covered.

Hotels have internet access — free or in paid packages.

Avoid kissing and other displays of affection in public: this goes against the norms of Zanzibar's Muslim community.

It is better to tip in local currency. In restaurants tips are 10% of the bill; many hotels add a 10% service charge themselves.
